Blog assignment #3

July 17, 2009

For those of you who do not know, as contestants in the Miss Teen Canada World Pageant, we must complete assignments on our blogs that will be judged as part of our final mark for the pageant.  Each assignment is marked based on writing skills, and the overall appearance of our blog.  Here is assignment #3.

We are asked to visit the Free the Children website and pick a photo which we feel is the most powerful from the Media room. Below is the Photo I chose.

Free the Children is truely an amazing organization.  They're goal is to free children from poverty and exploitation and free young people from the idea that they are powerless to affect positive change in the world.  If I was the marketing Director for Free the Children and I had to choose the most powerful image from the photo gallery, I would choose the above image of the little girl.  This little girl was caught in the action of working on her school work.  With Free the Children's help, this little child has the opportunity to go to school and receive a proper education.  I can see in her eyes that she is happy. She is full of hope and wonder.  She is thankful for being given a chance to step forward and learn.  When I first looked at this picture it made me feel humble, and happy for this little girl.  You never know how rough her home life may be.  She could be living in very poor situations with no clean water, and not a under sturdy roof.  She could be hungry for most of her days, and she may live in fear everyday of her life.  As for this one moment captured, she is at ease.  She knows that there are people in the world that care about her, and her family and friends.  She knows people all over the world are trying to help her and her family stay on their two feet.  This little girl is grateful there is people in the world donating to Free the Children because she knows all children in the world deserve to go to school, and live healthy, happy lifestyles.

My Platform

July 15, 2009

I think that it is important for everyone to know that there is still bullying and people still get treated unequally.  I would love to be a spokesperson for young people of today in hopes of changing the way it is now.  People get treated unfairly and unequally everyday, everywhere.  Even at my own school I have seen inequality happen right in front of my eyes numerous times.  I have never been afraid to step in and stand up for the victim if needed.  There is a right way and a wrong way to fix a problem.  If you don't tell anyone you are being treated unfairly, nothing will be changed.  If you speak up for yourself, or tell someone who can help you, problems can be fixed.  Whether it is being bullied for race, culture, religion, sexuality, social status, or gender, it is not acceptable.  I want to find ways to solve these problems that are still happening today.  We are the future, and if we cannot live in the same world all together, there will be no one left.  I believe people should be allowed to be different, if we were all the same it would be boring.  Everyone on the planet needs to be accepting of one another so we can work together and keep our earth alive.  My platform is to spread the word of equality, and let people know inequality is still in effect and we need to work together to change this.

Saskatoon! Assignment #2 part 2

July 14, 2009

HI there! This is Miss Teen Central Saskatchewan once again, bringing you the best of Saskatoon, my home town, or I should say City! You can visit my blog at the link right above where you will find Genevieve tucker posting blogs about her home town in BC! My name is also Genevieve, Genevieve jones and I would like to take you on a tour of Saskatoon the city that shines brightly in the world and i my heart.

I personally reside from Saskatoon. Saskatoon is the largest city in Saskatchewan, and one of the most cultured and fast growing too. We have a population of 209,400 and it is always growing, especially over the more recent years. There is so much to take in and experience in my city all year round. It is so hard to direct people in one general direction when it comes to specific events and tourist attractions. Currently taking place in downtown Saskatoon is the delicious event, Taste of Saskatchewan, which features over 30 of Saskatoon’s most prestigious restaurants and amazing performance from the city’s own bands and musical acts. The event is located right next door to the delta Bessborough and the Sheraton Cavalier two of the best hotels along the river front.

Another amazing experience on the river is the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan. This event showcases performers acting out two of Shakespeare’s plays, this year being, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Antony and Cleopatra. Other attractions include feasts just like in the medieval times, and DanceEgypt preforming Dances of the Nile. The whole event raises money for various charities, while taking in no profit for itself. This year it is also the 25th anniversary of Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan! I personally have gone to this event and I can say that it is simply amazing, the actors are incredible and it is so easy to relax while you listen to them speaking with the quiet sounds of the Saskatchewan river playing in the background.

Saskatoon will soon attract even more tourists with its River Landing project.

My city is a place where everyone can find their own niche. We have many theaters that feature regular block buster movies, unique plays and top musical acts..the next being the Blink 182 concert, with opening bands like Fall Out Boy and The All American Rejects!! At the Persephone Theater they are always trying something new, I recently attended a play that took the audience through the city to a secret location where the play was performed. It was so different and very exciting, the play was very dark and grown up but it was easy to enjoy it. If your not into plays then there is a great club scene as well in Saskatoon. For the last 6 months or so I have attended some of the Good Life productions at the Odeon in Saskatoon. These ‘raves’ are far from the normal stereotype of raves. Although there is always something minor that does go wrong, the raves however are a place that people who don’t normally fit in can fit in. They are a blast and even though my friends and I do typically fit in with the norms of society we love to go out dancing and hit the techno scene featured at the Odeon raves.

We also have one of the largest museums in the province with the best of the past. The Western Development Museum has been a favorite of tourist and Saskatoon residence for 60 years!! And now there is a new wing open to the public called "The Saskatchewan Story" this new section focuses on the human side of the Boom Town story, what it was like to be a farmer or a foreigner coming to the city and starting a new life. "Boom Town" as it is called is full of old time shops and cars with great stories, it is a fun place to explore!

Saskatoon is full of very patriotic fans, devoted to their home football teams like the Saskatchewan Roughriders

And Saskatoon's own team the HillTops!

Saskatoon truly shines!!

Welcome to Saskatchewan

July 13, 2009

Hello everyone, this is Assignment number two and Genevieve and I, the other Genevieve, are teaming up to bring you bits and pieces of our provinces most brilliant attractions. I would like to thank Genevieve for being my partner on this!!

My province has recently become a major hot spot because of the economic down turn. Saskatchewan has a lot to offer and I would like to take you on a tour of everything that Saskatchewan brings to the table. My name is Genevieve Jones and I am Miss Teen Central Saskatchewan-World. Saskatchewan has a lot more to offer than most people think. Many would look at my province as a small flat underpopulated dry plain, but that is not how I see it. Saskatchewan has a vast cultural community and there is a lot to take in and experience. The land scape of Saskatchewan is generally flat but it holds more than just grass and wheat. Saskatchewan is a tight knit community that is easy to fit into. People are always helping each other out and it always makes me smile when I see someone go out of their way to make a difference in someone's day. That is what Saskatchewan is all about.

Saskatchewan has a little something for everyone. No matter what your style or budget it there is a place in Saskatchewan that has a home to fit your heart perfectly. Saskatchewan realty can find you your dream house, whether it be small and quaint or large and luxurious. Even if you simply want to visit Saskatchewan has a small but impressive amount of beautiful hotels and resorts, including: the Bessborough in Saskatoon, the Sand Castle Resort in Borden Saskatchewan, the Hotel Saskatchewan in Regina and the Elk Ridge Resort in Waskesiu Saskatchewan. Each hotel and resort listed is unique and beautiful offering a relaxing or exciting experience within its doors and home cities or towns. There is more to come, but for now you can Oooo and Awhhh over the beauty of these hot spot hotels and resorts!

Canada day

July 09, 2009

Pictures from Canada day. Hope you enjoy! These are Pictures from our Bhangra dance

Oh, Canada :) Public appearance

July 09, 2009

I'm a tad bit late to wish Canada "Happy Birthday", but a little late is never too late.  Canada may be showing some wear and tear here and there, but for 142 years old, I'd say our big country is looking pretty good.  Every year, in my little town of Prince George, we have a patriotic celebration of Canada's birthday at Fort George Park.

At this event, family and friends unite in celebrating our country.  There is fun activities for the kids, and people of all ages.  There is face painting, water fights at our small water park, lots of different types of foods and the best of all, the great cultural performances.

I was lucky enough to take part in one of them.  Once again, I joined the Bhangra dance club of Prince George and performed a song called "Gori".  (Which means "white girl" in Punjabi).  This is led by my fantastic instructor Harman.  I hope to be as good as these dancers some day, they are absolutely phenomenal.  I loved my pink traditional east Indian Suit I got to wear, it was beautiful, although it was a very hot day outside and I was a tad uncomfortable ha ha.  Over all it was a beautiful, patriotic day, and all I have to say is I am so happy and blessed to be Canadian!

Variety Children's Radiothon

June 26, 2009

Every year in June, My beautiful town of Prince George, B.C takes part in the Variety Children's Radiothon.  Variety is a children's charity.  Their goal is to raise funds and distribute grants throughout British Columbia to inspire hope, enrich lives, and build a better future for children who have special needs.  I was very fortunate to be a part of this special day.  On June 24th I called into the Radiothon at a local radio station called "94X" and pledged $100.00.  After pledging the money, I received the option of in return for my money, getting a little huggable teddy bear which I named "Miss Teen Northern British Columbia".  On June 27th, I took part in the charity's thanks at our local Child development centre.  Here, I was enlightened by the Variety Charity's spokespeople.  I was also granted to give my teddy bear to a child at the development centre.  Unfortunately, the little girl I gave the bear to was having a rough day, so I never got to take her picture, but there is a few other children I took pictures of with their fluffy bears.  I was very happy and pleased to hear that at this year's radiothon, my small town of Prince George raised $40,000.00 for The Variety Charity.  WOW!

Happy Father's Day

June 21, 2009

I am daddy's little girl.  Always will be. Me and my father are two peas in a pod.  Practically everyone says we are spitting images of each other and I always deny and say "eww no way" (ha ha), But I know inside that we really are. From the minute I was born, my mother told me that I changed my father.  He even quit hunting because of me!  He truely is an amazing person and an amazing father. He always does so much for my family.

Even if Im having a really bad day and i come home hiding my tears behind a smile, he can always sense when there is something wrong and will be there in a flash to try to get me to feel better.  He may seem unaffected by his surroundings, but that isn't so.  He has a hard outer shell, but inside he has a soft, kind heart.  My Dad is awesome and I love him so much!  I really hope everyone is having a great Sunday with their fathers :)

My "Free The Children" Fundraiser

June 17, 2009

Free The Children is the world's largest network of children helping children through education, with more than one million youth involved their innovative education and development programs in 45 countries.  Free the Children is funded and driven by the energy and passion of the youth.  65% of the funding comes from young people.  Visit "Free The Children" to find out on more ways that you can help support the Free the children association in building schools, health care, water sanitation for countries in need of our help.

On Sunday, June.14th, I had my first ever "Free The Children" fundraiser.  It was so amazing to see so many new and familiar faces in the crowd.  It was held at a local performing stage in Prince George called "Art Space".  My singing teacher, Dawn Boudreau, helped me organize the event.  Local singers and musicians performed for the very generous crowd and we managed to raise $900.00 all by donation!  I was so impressed.

It was so amazing to see such a great turn out for such a great cause.  The venue was stifling hot and almost unbearable to stand, but we all managed to put on a show like we always do!  It was an interesting night, because not only was I singing, I was also introducing each performer  and speaking about the charity as well as my singing group.  I am so blessed and thankful for all of the supportive people in my life.  Without each and every one of them, this experience would become very difficult.  I am so blessed and great-ful.  I can't wait to raise more and more money for the charity.

Just think, if all of the fifty girls in the pageant raised $400.00 each, we would have $20,000.00!  We are making it possible for "Free The Children" to achieve their goals in freeing children from poverty and exploitation and to free young people from the notion that they are powerless to affect positive change in the world.  Thank you all once again for being a part of the fundraiser on Sunday, It was truely an unforgettable evening.

Graduation

June 17, 2009

Finally, school has come to an end.  It has been a long thirteen years of school.  I cannot wait to move on to college and become something important.  I have been waiting for so long to move onto a career that is important to society.  I am torn between becoming a writer, psychologist, or a police officer.  These all seem to be completely different paths, but I am a well rounded person and I know I can do whatever I want to as long as I work hard and never give up.

Last week I received my certificate stating that I have gone through grade 12 with honors.  Meaning that I received honor roll my entire grade 12 year.  I am so proud of myself.

I cannot wait to jump into the big world ahead of me, all i can do is go up, up, up!  ---> Here is a picture of me in front of my high school (Prince George Secondary School) after the awards night last Thursday.

Today is the day!

June 14, 2009

Tonight at 7 P.M I will be hosting my first ever "Free The Children" fundraiser. Here is an article that was written about me in the local "Prince George Citizen" yesterday.

Gen Tucker, a contestant in the Miss Teen Canada pageant, will hold a fundraiser for Free the Children with a little help from her friends Sunday at 7 p.m. at Art Space. Tucker, 18, is required to raise funds for the charity as part of the eligibility requirements for the pageant. Tucker is a student of Dawn Boudreau Music Centre and will put on a show with fellow students. The singers will be accompanied by guitar, piano and will even perform in karaoke style. “The intimate setting of Art Space is perfect for this fundraising event and Jim Brinkman has donated the space for the cause,” said Tucker. “Since Art Space is where I had my first performances with Dawn and her other students, it’s pretty fitting.” Admission is by donation and all funds raised will go to the Free the Children charity.

A reminder

June 08, 2009

Hey everyone,

I wanted to remind you all that on June.14th/ 09 (this Sunday), I will be holding a fundraiser at a local performing space (Art Space) for Free The Children.  It will be a fabulous night of heartwarming performances by local musicians trained by Dawn Boudreau, such as myself.  It starts at 7, doors open at 6:30.  Admission by donation of course.  Tell everyone! Everyone and anyone is invited. I hope to see all of who can make it there.  It is going to be a blast! For more information, check out my facebook group " MissTeenNorthernBritishColumbia " and click on events. Thank you for your support!

As you all can see, there is new photos that have been added to my Flickr Widget. Check them out! The Punjabi Mela is a fundraiser put on by the Sikh Community. They were raising money the hospital and medical reasons. I was performing a song called " Gori ". I learned how to dance, as well as lip sink in Punjabi. It was an amazing experience.

During the May Day parade, I was asked to be included on a float. My mother didn't have a float, but we do have a pretty neat car, so I got to sit in top of the solstice and throw out candy to all the Children. It was a lot of fun and the weather was great. My next event is coming up here on June 14th. My singing teacher, Dawn Boudreau is organizing some local musicians (singers) and we are performing at a local space in town to fundraise for Free the Children charity. I cannot wait!

My First Blog Entry

May 24, 2009

Well I am not too sure how to do this!

This is my first blog entry ever.  Where to start? Where to begin? I can start with saying that I just had an amazing graduation weekend.  I had my prom and graduation all in the same day, so it has been one crazy weekend.  Check out a few of my photos of my date and I on my Flickr widget.  Today has been a great weekend because I got to spend it with my closest friends and family members.  I am thrilled that it is almost June.  As a finalist of Miss teen Canada- World, this means only two more months to wait until the pageant!

I'd best introduce myself to begin with.  My name is Genevieve Tucker.  I am 18 years old and am from Beautiful Prince George, British Columbia.  I am a very fun-loving, outgoing, determined young lady with a strong passion for animals.  Just recently I was honored to be labeled "Miss Teen Northern British Columbia- World" , after becoming one of the top finalists in the Miss Teen British Columbia.  I have been so grateful for this opportunity that has been given to me.  I have a chance, a long with 49 other contestants, to be crowned  "Miss Teen Canada- world" in July this summer!  I would be so trilled and honored to receive this title because it would give me a chance to speak out to teens across Canada and make them aware of the problems facing our communities everyday, and also ways that they can help solve these problems.  Anyways, I hope you all have enjoyed my first Blog! Check out the official Miss Teen Canada- World site yourself and see for yourself how amazing this experience can be.  http://www.missteencanadaworld.com
